Simply Read: Day 2
Good News to the Poor
It's day 2 of Simply Read, an 8-day Bible reading challenge adapted from ESV Reader’s Bible, Six-Volume Set aimed at helping us set aside time—prolonged time—to immerse ourselves in God’s Word as we enter this holiday season.
Today, we pick up Jesus’s story with him in the Synagogue in Nazareth, his hometown. After reading from the book of Isaiah, he boldly declares, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus’s provocative words ultimately lead to a riot, that almost results in him being thrown off a cliff at the outskirts of the town. Miraculously, Jesus escapes the grasp of the angry mob, and goes on to name twelve apostles from among those who were following him.
With this band of misfits at his side, Jesus then begins his public ministry, healing the sick, casting out demons, and teaching the multitudes about the kingdom of God.
