Simply Read: Day 4
He Is Not Here . . .
It's day 4 of Simply Read, an 8-day Bible reading challenge adapted from ESV Reader’s Bible, Six-Volume Set aimed at helping us set aside time—prolonged time—to immerse ourselves in God’s Word as we enter this holiday season.
We have arrived at the definitive moment of all of human history: Jesus enters Jerusalem for the last time, resolved to submit to the will of his Father to the uttermost. As he is arrested, beaten, flogged, and finally crucified on a hill called “The Skull,” Jesus remains steadfast, even when his closest friends abandon him.
Without warning, the sky darkens. The huge curtain hiding God’s dwelling place in the temple from human eyes is torn in two. And Jesus musters the strength to utter his final, faith-filled words: “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” And then he breathes his last breath and dies.
But that is not where the story ends . . .
